What are the advantages of becoming a Certified Healthcare Trustee and Leader?

Earning the distinction of becoming a Certified Healthcare Trustee and Leader demonstrates your commitment to your community, regulatory agencies, and peers. Medical professionals often attain board certifications and other designations to show their expertise and proficiency in a given area; earning your CHTL allows you the opportunity to validate your governance competency and leadership commitment to your community and peers.

What are the requirements that I must meet to earn the CHTL designation?

To earn the designation you must complete and pass the CHTL exam, with a score of 70% or greater. Then you must sign the attestation at the end of the exam. For renewing CHTLs, only 12 hours of CE is needed every three years, and no exam is required to renew the designation.

How long do I have to complete the exam after purchase?

You will have seven days to complete the exam and up to three attempts to pass.

Where can I take the CHTL Exam?

To take the CHTL exam, you may purchase the exam directly on our website here.   Once your purchase is complete, a link to the online exam will be sent to you via email.  Alternatively, email [email protected] and a link to the online exam will be sent to you via email along with an invoice for the CHTL application fee ($125 for THT members and $150 for non-members). You will have three opportunities to take and pass the exam.

How can I earn education hours toward my CHTL?

CHTL CE hours can be earned through THT’s on-demand webinars, live workshops and webinars, and events like the Healthcare Governance Conference, with additional external programs eligible for review upon submission of documentation. Education hours can be taken from a variety of sources but approval is up to the discretion of THT staff. Alternatively, if your hospital offers in-house education, you may submit your program agenda to be accredited with CHTL hours. If you have specific questions about whether or not a certain session or seminar is accepted please contact THT.

How do I renew my CHTL?

To renew your CHTL status, email [email protected] with proof of your continuing education credits (12 hours). Once approved, an invoice for the CHTL renewal fee ($125 for THT members and $150 for non-members) will be sent to you via email.

What do I need to turn in to record my CE hours?

THT will maintain a record of all THT programs the applicant attended. If the applicant attended any outside programs they need verified, they will need to submit proof of attendance and the program agenda to be approved by THT.

What are the number of hours that the trustee must have in order to renew their certification?

If you are renewing your CHTL you must have 12 hours of CE every three years.

How do I know how many hours I have from THA/THT?

When will I receive my certification?

You will receive your CHTL Certificate and Certification Letter within 1-2 business days of passing your exam.

What is the CHTL Accreditation Program?

The CHTL Accreditation Program enables THT member hospitals to receive approval for their in-house governance education programs, allowing trustees to earn CHTL continuing education credit through structured training that aligns with core governance competencies. Learn more here.

Do I need to turn in my CEs or does THT keep them on file?

While THT makes every effort to track and maintain records of continuing education earned through our programs, we recommend that you also store and maintain your own documentation. Please retain certificates of completion for any CE you plan to submit, and submit all documentation to THT at the same time when applying for certification or renewal.

Is there a certain time frame to apply for my CHTL?

You may become certified at any point throughout the year, as it is an open application window.

How long is my certification valid?

The cycle for the CHTL designation is three years. Renew your certification within 90 days of your expiration date. When renewing your CHTL you must complete 12 hours of CE within this three year time frame.
