Guidelines for New Applicants
- Must be on a hospital/health system board for at least one year;
- Complete at least 24 hours of continuing education by approved sources;
- CEO must approve and sign off;
- Submit application fee of $100 (members) or $150 (non-members) at time of knowledge assessment;
- Pass knowledge assessment (three opportunities to pass); and
- Send in required documentation by May 15th.
Guidelines for Renewal
- Must be previously certified by THT for the term prior;
- Complete 12 hours of continuing education by approved sources;
- CEO must approve and sign off;
- Submit application fee of $100 (members) or $150 (non-members) at time of knowledge assessment;
- Pass knowledge assessment (three opportunities to pass); and
- Must complete renewal between January 1 and May 15 of renewal year.
Education
Education must be completed by either the approved sources or specified categories/hours.
Approved Sources:
- Texas Healthcare Trustees
- Texas Hospital Association
- American Hospital Association
- Center for Health Care Governance
Specific Categories/hours:
- 6 hours of quality-related education
- 6 hours of governance-related education
- 6 hours of fiduciary-related education
- 6 hours of general/community-related education

Instructions
THT Board Certification is for board members that are committed to improving their hospitals’ and communities’ health. To get started, visit the Certification Program details page.
Gather items you will need to gather before beginning:

- Education proof of attendance for last three years.
- Payment information.
- CEO’s verbal approval (CEO will sign off in the end).
- Read instructions.
- Complete knowledge assessment.
- Fill in required information.
- Mail in documentation.
Once the online portion is completed, you will receive a certificate of completion and a verification form. Mail copies of the certificate of completion, verification form* and education proof of attendance** to:

**Proof of attendance must only be submitted if you did not attend education from an approved source.
Certification Notification
THT will review all documents and notify the board member and CEO of certification status by email. Upon successful completion, the governance certificate will be mailed to the address provided.
To be certified for the current year, all documentation must be submitted to Texas Healthcare Trustees no later than May 15.
